Seaweed and microalgae have long been considered a potential replacement protein source for soybean meal in poultry feed.

New research looks at evaluating spirulina and other algae types as pressure mounts to feed the global poultry sector. Production rose by 1.73 per cent (or 1.72 million metric tons) between 2020 and 2022, with continued upward trend forecast.

Microscopic analysis found there to be potential in spirulina, with nearly 50 per cent protein content, and rich in amino acids.
